What Is Volume?
Calculating volume, one can measure the space inside an object in a three-dimensional projection. This metric is measured in many units; barrels, gallons, liters, and cubic meters are some of the most commonly used.
The areas where one can apply their knowledge of volume are diverse – from household to construction and machine building. The need to measure the volume of your aquarium, gas tank, or water pull to know how much liquid you`ll need to fill them up are only some things that make us calculate volume.
How to Calculate Volume?
Formulas used for calculation vary depending on the object`s shape. The formula for spheric containers requires knowing their radius, whereas, with polygon objects, you need to know their side length. Let’s take a look at several examples.
- For a rectangular container, use the formula V =lwh, where V – volume, l – length, w – width, and h – height. For instance, 10cmx4cmx5cm=200cm3.
- For a sphere-shaped container, V =(4/3)πr3, where r is the radius. Let’s take r=5, then the volume is 4/3)x3.14x53=523.3cm3.
- For cube, V =s3, where s is the side length. Given s=3cm, V=27cm3.
